Democrats in the House of Delegates passed SB 1 (Criminal Law – Wearing, Carrying, or Transporting Firearms – Restrictions – Gun Safety Act of 2023)

This bill would limit the places where citizens with a legal concealed carry permit could bring a firearm. A similar law in New York was ruled unconstitutional, but it was passed today 93 to 42.

All Republicans voted “no” on the bill. The only Democrats to vote “no” include Tiffany T. Alston of Prince George’s County, Brian Crosby of Southern Maryland and Sheree Sample-Hughes of the Eastern Shore.

Republican Delegate Kevin Hornberger released a statement about the vote;

“Today the citizens of Maryland were served a grave injustice. In my nine years of service to my constituents in Annapolis, I have never witnessed such a disgraceful anti-deliberative floor session than what occurred today regarding SB-1, the so-called “Gun Safety” Act of 2023,” Hornberger wrote.

“In years past, floor debates and the amendment process were carried out – sometimes for hours on end – to consider every viewpoint. That did not happen today. I had a good-faith amendment that would have exempted medical first responders if they held a valid carry permit, given that we are now asking EMS to respond to increasingly dangerous situations, and was not afforded the opportunity to offer this amendment due to the Democrats closing the debate. I am voting NO on SB-1 regardless since it is one of the worst expansions of gun control since 2013, but am also a strong NO on the motion to end the debate on an issue as important as this.”

There were a lot of Democrats in moderate districts that voted for this bill, including one that posted a picture of herself posing with the MOMS Demand Action group.
