Can a Conservative Upset Hogan in the Senate Primary?

The Maryland Primary is less than two weeks away and the question is which Democrat will face Larry Hogan in the Maryland U.S. Senate race.

Democratic candidates Prince George’s County Executive Anglea Alsobrooks and Congressman David Trone started off trying to out “left” each other in the Democratic primary to see who  would get the win and cruise to victory in the November General Election.

That all changed when former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan entered the race. Now both Democrats can’t go too far left and have decided to market themselves as the only one candidate that can beat Hogan.

But what about Hogan? Does he need to worry about his party’s primary?

Republicans are still upset about his opposition (continuing opposition) to former President Donald Trump.

Republican voters sent a message to Hogan in the 2022 Gubernatorial Primary when they selected Trump-backed candidate Dan Cox over Hogan’s hand picked candidate Kelly Schultz.

Conservatives might want to send another message to Hogan by defeating him in this primary, but that would give the Democrats an easy path to victory.

Even if Republicans voters wanted to concede the Senate seat to the Democrats and punish Hogan, which other GOP candidate would they choose?

There is no high-profile conservative candidate such as Cox or Neil Parrott in this race.

Saying “Anyone But Hogan” will split the vote and turn Hogan into the nominee.

The alternative candidate with the most money and name ID is Robin Ficker. He has ran TV ads but is that enough? He has also ran multiple times in different races. Are GOP voters looking for someone new?

Lorie Friend would be considered an ideal candidate as she is young, has a few years (and not decades) of election experience and appears to be a conservative. The only problem is that she has limited name experience and cash.

John A. Myrick is another candidate that has ran strong online campaign but also has limited cash.

I always enjoy and hope for all competitive races, but Hogan should win this primary easily. It will be interesting to see if Hogan can get over 50 percent and who finishes second between Ficker, Friend and Myrick.
