MD GOP Will Lose Seats in House of Delegates

The Republican Party had 42 seats in the House of Delegates between 2019 & 2022 after having as many as 50 seats between 2015 and 2018.

I thought the GOP could have gotten close to 50 again this year but it appears the GOP will actually lose a seat or two.

Hopefully they will pick up Democratic Del. Heather Bagnell’s seat as Kerry Gillespie has the lead but absentee ballots still remain.

The Republicans will lose at least one seat as Joe Boteler’s vacant seat in District 8 and Brenda Thiam’s seat in District 2B are now in the hands of Democrats.

Thiam’s loss really hurts for Republicans.

It was not just that another Republican seat was lost but she was the only African American delegate for the GOP.

Although she was appointed, Thiam was also the only current Republican delegate to lose in the General Election.

She was one of their rising stars before Tuesday’s defeat.

If Bagnell retains her seat, the Maryland GOP will drop to 40 seats.

It does not appear Republicans will lose anymore seats (although who knows with all these absentee ballots still out there).
