GOP House and MD Freedom Caucus Battling Over District 35B

–Delegate Kevin Hornberger-

It’s primary season and in extreme red and blue districts, usually an incumbent gets challenged by a candidate within their party.

Once again District 35B Delegate Kevin Hornberger is being challenged in the Republican primary.

This year his main competition in the Cecil County single-member House district is Derek Howell.

The difference between this year’s primary is the creation of the Maryland Freedom Caucus.

Hornberger has already been endorsed by the Maryland House Republican Caucus.

“The Maryland House Republican Caucus Committee is proud to endorse Delegate Kevin Hornberger for re-election in District 35B.

“Kevin Hornberger is a lifelong Republican, a Cecil County native, and a proven voice who has consistently stood up for taxpayers, public safety, and Maryland families in Annapolis.”

However; the Freedom Caucus has jumped into this race and endorsed Howell.

“Maryland needs more than another politician making promises. We need leaders with the courage to stand firm, defend our values, and fight for working families when it matters most.

“That’s exactly who Derek Howell is.

“Cecil County deserves a delegate who will never back down from the fight for Maryland’s future.”

The Freedom Caucus has continued to spar with the House GOP in Maryland by going after establishment Republicans.

The Freedom Caucus has gone after minority leader Jason Buckel the past few years. Buckel and Hornberger are close friends and poliicial allies so its no surprise the Freedom Caucus endorsed Hornberger’s opponent and gave him a donation.

According to the Maryland Campaign Financial Reports, Hornberger has around $10,759 in his account.

Howell just had over $16,000 and received help from the Freedom Caucus as Friends of Kathy Szeliga gave him a $6,000 donation in May.

Hornberger won a tight three-person race by 116 votes in 2022 and this one should be close too.
