Republicans Still Needed for Winnable Seats in MD House and Senate
There are still many battleground districts in the House of Delegates and the state Senate that don’t have a Republican candidate. Here is a list of winnable districts that need a Republican candidate(s) in the next two days before the filing deadline.
Senate
District 33
District 33 in Anne Arundel County was in the hands of the Republicans when Sen. Ed Reilly retired and District 33 Delegate Sid Saab went after the vacant seat but was upset by Democrat Dawn Giles in 2022. Saab has not announced if he is seeking a rematch with Giles. No one has filed.
House of Delegates
District 12B
Republican Ashley P. Arias beat Democrat Gary Simmons on Election Day but was crushed in absentee ballots and Simmons went on to become delegate. This is a very competitive district and let’s hope Arias or another Republican files at the last minute.
District 30A
This is was a split district between the late Speaker Micheal Busch and Republican Ron George in 2014 and it hasn’t been too gerrymandered since 2022. Republican Doug Rathell beat Democratic Delegate Dana Jones on Election Day and Delegate Dylan Behler was appointed. It is very frustrating that no Republican has filed.
District 33C
Another winnable district for Republicans is 33C. Republican Kerry Gillespie was another victim of absentee ballots in 2022 and she should have beaten Delegate Heather Bagnell four years ago. I know there are Republicans who are trying to get Gillespie to run against Bagnell again in 2026. Gillespie has name ID and a strong base from 2022. She could easily jump into this race at the last minute and give Bagnell a competitive race.
District 34A
The Democratic Delegate team of Johnson and Johnson also lost to former Republican Delegate Glen Glass on Election Day but beat him with absentee ballots. Glass has decided to run for County Council in Harford County, but no Republican has filed in this battleground district.
District 37A
How has a Republican not filed for office in the Eastern Shore’s District 37A? Democratic Delegate Sheree Sample-Hughes has been stripped of her leadership position by the Democrats for voting with Republicans and the Democrats probably won’t help her win in November. I’m assuming a Republican should file by Tuesday. A Republican should have filed for this seat six months ago.
