Republicans Need to Introduce A Real ‘No Tax on Tips’ Bill

Del. Adrian Boafo of Prince George’s County 'No Tax on Tips Act' is a misleading title that would raise the minimum wage
Democratic Del. Adrian Boafo of Prince George’s County is introducing the Maryland No Tax on Tips Act.
This sounds similar to President Donald Trump’s campaign promise to eliminate all federal income tax on tips. So it appears to be a great idea on the state level too, but with Democrats there is always a catch.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Boafo’s bill is multifaceted with a misleading title as it would raise the current $3.63 minimum wage for restaurant workers to $15 an hour, exempt them from paying taxes on their tips and give a $10,000 to all restaurants owners to help them adjust to this crazy new cost.
Instead of increasing the $3.63 minimum wage to $15 and giving tax credits to deal with these new economic strain on businesses, why not just exempt all tip workers from taxes?
Democrats will argue tax exemption on tips is part of Boafo’s bill, but will tipping still be necessary if restaurant workers would make $15 an hour?
Boafo and the Democrats know that tipping will be a thing of the past and limited if restaurant workers receive $15 an hour so the tax exemption on tips would be minimal. Republicans need to introduce a bill that would only exempt all state taxes on tips under the current system.
If a restaurant workers makes a couple hundred a night, why can’t they keep more money in their pocket by eliminating taxes on tips.
Why? Because it is less revenue for the state. Instead the Democrats want the business owners of Maryland to pick up the tab, as usual.
