Democrats Kill Bill to Ban Sexually Explicit Materials in Elementary School Libraries

Democrat Eric Ebersole lead the charge in killing a bill that would ban sexually explicit materials in elementary school libraries

Del. Nino Mangione presented a HB 25 Public Schools – Sexually Explicit Materials – Prohibited in Libraries and Media Centers. According to the synopsis this bill is “Prohibiting sexually explicit materials in elementary, middle, and secondary public school libraries and media centers; defining sexually explicit materials as books and auditory and visual material that contain graphic or obscene depictions of sexual activity that are not age appropriate or used as part of the approved instructional materials for instruction on family life and human sexuality; etc.”

Mangione presented the bill in the Ways and Means committee on Jan. 31 and released a statement before his presentation.”[This bill is] to stop sexually explicit material in children’s school libraries and up against immense opposition, which amazes me. Why would any human being want to subject 4th and 5th graders to sexually explicit material.”

Democrats didn’t agree as the bill received an “Unfavorable” motion from Democrat Eric Ebersole and all the Democrats in the subcommittee and the full Ways and Means committee agreed with the “unfavorable” this bill.

Jheanelle K. Wikins, Denise Roberts Eric Ebersole, Edith Patterson, Melissa Wells, Kris Fair, Caylin Young, Shaneka Henson, Roberts, Brooke Grossman, Greg Wim, Joe Vogel, Chao Wu, Bernice Mireku-North, Julie Palakovich Carr, Dalya Attar, and Jessica Feldmark voted for the “unfavorable”.

All six Republicans in Ways and Means voted against the “unfavorable” Mangione’s bill.
