After longtime Sen. Bryan Simonaire (R-31) announced he would not seek reelection in 2026,  Delegate Nic Kipke announced he was interesting in taking over the state senate seat in the Anne Arundel County district.

Kipke went down to the Board of Election and filed to run for Simonaire’s soon-to-be vacant seat. He made the official announcement on his Facebook page

“Yesterday Susannah and our little Kips came down to Annapolis with me to celebrate a new chapter in our life: I filed for election to the Maryland State Senate.
“With Senator Simonaire’s announcement that he will not be seeking re-election, this seat will be vacant, and I am excited to move into a new role in public service. These are big shoes to fill! Senator Simonaire is well-respected and has served our community well for the past two decades. I wish him all the best as he moves into the next chapter of his life.
“Over the years, I hope my love for this district has shown through my constituent service and my involvement in our community. I care about the people in our district and I hope that you’ll trust me to continue serving you as your State Senator. I’m excited to continue to fight for our common values, defend the Constitution, and work to solve problems in our district.
“I’ll have more news about the campaign after this session ends on April 7, so stay tuned!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as one of your State Delegates for all these years. It has truly been an honor. I now ask for your vote to continue serving our community as your State Senator.”
There was talk in 2022 that Kipke was considering a run for Anne Arundel County Executive. The Democratic County Executive Stu Pittman was seeking reelection but Kipke decided not to run when Jessica Haire, the wife of Dirk Haire, elected chairman of the Republican Party of Maryland, entered the race.
With Pittman being term limited, there was a chance that Kipke might consider to run for the top gig in Anne Arundel County, but it appears Kipke wants to move to the other side of Bladen Street in Annapolis.
