GOP Upset Real Issues Not Being Addressed During Special Session
The Special Session is set for the week of Aug. 3 and Democratic leadership announced that the only legislation permitted is that related to Congressional redistricting.
The Maryland House Republican Caucus was not happy with that announcement and said this is time to tackle taxes, energy prices, etc.
“This decision is, quite frankly, appalling,” said House Minority Leader Delegate Jason Buckel.
“Since we left in Annapolis in April, energy prices have continued to rise, gas taxes have automatically increased, and Marylanders have continued to struggle. But the message the Democratic majority is sending to Marylanders is – your problems can wait; we need to play politics. It is the modern equivalent of ‘let them eat cake.’”
House and Senate Republicans sent a letter to the presiding officers last week, urging them to allow the consideration of other legislation, including bills addressing the cost of living and energy prices, hoping to provide some benefit for Marylanders in a special session convened exclusively for political purposes.
Both House and Senate Republicans had indicated their intention to offer legislation to address affordability issues should a Special Session occur.
“It is shameful that we are wasting taxpayer money to come in for a three-day legislative session solely to disenfranchise more than a million Marylanders,” said House Minority Whip Delegate Jesse Pippy.
“The fact that we are now prohibited from providing any kind of relief to our citizens just adds insult to injury. That tells you everything you need to know about their priorities.”
