Maryland Freedom Caucus Welcomes Federal Assistance to Baltimore

The following press release is from members of the Maryland Freedom Caucus regarding President Trump’s remarks today about deploying the National Guard to Baltimore City.
Today, President Trump cited an “obligation” to lend federal assistance in the form of the National Guard to the cities of Chicago and Baltimore, with the goal of reducing crime as successfully as has been seen in Washington, D.C., over the past two weeks.
Mayor Bowser not only publicly thanked President Trump for his leadership, under which crime in Washington, D.C., has dropped significantly with the deployment of the National Guard, but also issued an executive order to strengthen cooperation and response in her city. Washington, D.C., went 12 straight days without a homicide.
Violent crime is down nearly 50%, burglaries are down 48%, and car thefts are down 36%. The first duty of elected officials is to keep people safe.
If President Trump is willing to step in and help protect our nation’s capital, then Governor Wes Moore should be willing to work across the aisle to protect the citizens of Maryland. Every grandmother who can walk safely from her car to the store, every carjacking that is prevented, and every life that is saved matters.
The Maryland Freedom Caucus has stood resolutely for law and order, sponsoring bills this year that would keep murderers in prison for their full sentences, demand cooperation with ICE detainers for violent criminals, and empower law enforcement to protect property owners from criminal squatters.
Meanwhile, Governor Moore has spent the summer auditioning for president with wealthy and celebrity donors and influencers. Public safety must come before politics.
