Freedom Caucus Introducing Bill after Illegal Alien Found on Voter Rolls

The following article was submitted by the Maryland Freedom Caucus about introducing legislation after a issue was found with the voter rolls in Maryland.

The Maryland Freedom Caucus is calling for renewed scrutiny of the Maryland State Board of Elections following a written response from Jared DeMarinis, Maryland’s State Administrator of Elections, to the House Committee on House Administration.

At a December 17, 2025 hearing, the Committee examined the case of Ian Roberts, an illegal alien arrested on an outstanding deportation order who was found to be registered to vote in Maryland.

The Maryland Freedom Caucus,
working with grassroots advocates, uncovered the registration and called for transparency after months of unanswered requests for review of Maryland’s voter rolls.

In his response, Administrator DeMarinis maintains that he lacks authority to remove Roberts from the voter rolls absent additional documentation and argues that the presence of illegal aliens on the rolls is not concerning unless they are shown to have voted.

The Caucus says those positions underscore the need for independent review and federal scrutiny, particularly given that Roberts’ registration remained active despite apparent inactivity.

The Caucus also criticized the State Board’s continued refusal to provide voter registration data to the U.S. Department of Justice for review, despite repeated requests.

In response, the Maryland Freedom Caucus announced the Secure the Vote Act of 2026, prefiled legislation aimed at strengthening election integrity and restoring public confidence.

The bill would require proof of citizenship to register, photo identification for in-person voting, routine audits of the voter registration database, stronger absentee ballot verification, limits on absentee voting, elimination of ballot drop boxes, increased post-election transparency, provisional voting for those without ID, and uniform standards for municipal elections.

The Maryland Freedom Caucus has prefiled the legislation and looks forward to introducing it to the public when the 2026 General Assembly.
