Maryland House Passes Bill to Raise MDTA Debt Limit
HB 229 was passed by the House of Delegates last week. Basically this bill is going to cost Maryland drivers more money.
The synopsis of this bill on the Maryland General Assembly website states
“Increasing, from $4,000,000,000 to $5,000,000,000, the limit on the amount of certain revenue bonds that the Maryland Transportation Authority may have outstanding and unpaid on June 30 each year; etc.”
Baltimore County Delegate Ryan Nawrocki voted no on this bill and said that MDTA has already warned, in writing, that rising debt payments will require toll increases.
“This week, Democrats in Annapolis voted to expand MDTA borrowing, despite opposition. More borrowing, more debt payments higher tolls. And this won’t hit just one road… it affects every toll bridge, tunnel, and express toll lane across Maryland,” Nawrocki wrote on social media.
“Families already pay enough to get to work, school, and home. The government shouldn’t treat commuters like an ATM.”
